Sitka Voters Reject Cruise Passenger Cap Initiative
We are pleased to share that the local ballot initiative proposing a cap of 300,000 annual cruise ship passengers in Sitka did not pass in the May 28, 2025, special election.
Shee Atiká strongly opposed this measure, recognizing the significant harm it would have caused to Sitka’s economy, local jobs, and future investment, including Shee Atiká’s own efforts to grow respectful, culturally rooted tourism in the region. In response to the proposal, the Shee Atiká Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution in support of the City of Sitka’s current visitor management process and formally opposed the ballot initiative.
Shee Atiká also joined Save Sitka, a local coalition of businesses and community stakeholders, including Allen Marine, Sitka Dock Company, Samson Tug and Barge, and others, committed to sustainable economic development. We contributed $5,000 to support the coalition’s advocacy work and public outreach efforts.
This outcome protects the future of tourism in Sitka, including Shee Atiká’s recent investment in Sheet’ká Treetop Adventures, and helps ensure continued opportunities for shareholder employment, economic growth, and respectful cultural exchange with visitors.
We thank the shareholders who helped spread the word and those eligible to vote in Sitka who made their voices heard.
Shee Atiká remains committed to promoting sustainable tourism that honors our culture, supports the local economy, and builds long-term value for our shareholders and community.

In Our Communities
Grand Opening of Sheet'ká Treetop Adventure Park
The event welcomed community members, shareholders, and partners to the site at 4951 Halibut Point Road for an afternoon of celebration and connection. The ceremony included a welcome, Native dancers, and a ribbon cutting honoring the land and culture that make this project possible.
Guests enjoyed delicious food prepared by our team as a result of our newest tour offering, Sheet'ká Salmon Tales, and had the opportunity to explore the park through free guided tours of the aerial courses. Turnout was strong, with about 300 community members attending, and the energy was high as attendees got a first look at this exciting new attraction designed to bring adventure tourism and cultural connection together in one unforgettable experience.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to mark this major milestone—we’re excited to welcome locals and visitors alike to Sheet’ká Treetop Adventures all season long!

Shee Atiká Land Trust (SALT)
Shareholders Approve Shee Atiká Land Trust Resolution
We’re pleased to share that Resolution 2025-01, proposing the creation of the Shee Atiká Land Trust (SALT), has been approved by shareholders. The resolution passed with strong support:
-
YES: 90,814 votes
-
NO: 10,709 votes
This means the Shee Atiká Land Trust was officially established as an ANCSA Settlement Trust effective June 28, 2025.
SALT will protect approximately 3,000 acres at Katlian Bay (Tl'ayaaḵ'), ensuring this culturally and environmentally significant land cannot be sold, liened, or otherwise encumbered. The trust reflects Shee Atiká’s long-term commitment to responsible stewardship and honoring the values of our Tlingit heritage.
By placing these lands into SALT, we are taking a proactive step to safeguard this important place for future generations, preserving its natural beauty and cultural importance while maintaining alignment with our corporate mission and shareholder priorities.
Thank you to all shareholders who took the time to vote and make your voices heard. Your participation directly supports the preservation of our ancestral lands and the protection of shareholder interests.
We look forward to keeping you updated as the Shee Atiká Land Trust moves forward.

William Paul Sr. Award
Ptarmica Garnick
Congratulations to Ptarmica Garnick, Chief Administrative Officer at Shee Atiká, on receiving the William Paul Sr. Award—a tribute honoring exceptional service to Shee Atiká and its shareholders.
Ptarmica has been a vital part of the Shee Atiká team for more than 15 years, serving in a range of essential roles including Chief Financial Officer, Controller, and Accountant. Her deep institutional knowledge, steady leadership, and commitment to operational excellence have made a lasting impact on our corporation and community.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Service Operations Management from the University of Alaska Southeast. A proud Raven/Coho, Ptarmica is the daughter of Karen and Ole Taug of Juneau and Steve and Robin Garnick of Sitka. She is the eldest of nine children, and her roots run deep—her maternal grandparents are Mary Lekanof and the late Flore Lekanof, and her great-grandparents were Judson and Lena Brown.
Shee Atiká would not be where it is today without the tireless efforts of individuals like Ptarmica. This award is a heartfelt expression of gratitude from all our shareholders for her years of dedicated service.

Movers and Shakers
Meet Angie Ketah, Seasonal Tourism Manager
Angela Ketah, Kaakwéit yóo xat duwasáakw, is a mother of three—Kayaani, Rawl, and Olen Weathers—and the owner of Sitka Flowers & The Chocolate Moose.
In April, Angela joined Shee Atiká, Inc. as the Seasonal Tourism Manager, working alongside Tourism Director Tonia Puletau Lang to launch a brand-new tour: Salmon Tales. From purchasing a food trailer to building a menu and hiring staff, it’s been a fast-paced and rewarding journey. This season, guests can enjoy a hearty rice bowl featuring salmon, vegetables, and reindeer sausage while hearing local stories about Sitka’s history, fishing, and culture. Visitors are also invited to explore Harbor Point, home to Sheet’ká Treetop Adventures.
Looking ahead, Angela and the team are developing long-term plans to share Tlingit culture through artist demonstrations, educational signage, and subsistence food experiences. A highlight of the summer was Locals Day, where 400–500 community members and shareholders were welcomed for a hands-on celebration of the new tourism experience.
Angela says being part of Shee Atiká’s tourism team and bringing this vision to life with such incredible leadership and staff has been an unforgettable experience.

Tlingit • Ch’áak’ Wooshkeetaan Clan
This quarter, we honor the extraordinary legacy of Gilbert A. Truitt, a lifelong Sitka resident, respected educator, community advocate, and proud shareholder. Gil was a Shee Atiká director from 1974-1978.
Known by many as “Mr. Edgecumbe,” Gil was instrumental in preserving the history of Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe High School (MEHS), where he taught and

served in leadership for over three decades and was a proud basketball coach and referee for more than 18 years. He was inducted into Mt Edgecumbe Hall of Fame, and was often honored in the yearbook by students during his time at the school.
A graduate of Harding University and Arizona State University, Gil dedicated his life to education, youth mentorship, and cultural preservation. He was a key figure in the reopening of MEHS after its closure in 1983 and remained a beloved presence on campus well into retirement.
In 2019, MEHS designated a day in his honor—Mr. Gil Truitt Day—a fitting tribute to a man who shaped generations of students with wisdom, discipline, and compassion.
We remember Gil not only for his accomplishments, but for his deep love of Sitka, his tireless commitment to future generations, and his enduring belief in the power of education and community.

SAFE Trustees Announce Special One-Time Distribution
The trustees of the Shee Atiká Fund Endowment (“SAFE”) declared a special one-time distribution of $7.00 per trust unit. The distribution was announced at the June 28 Shee Atiká Annual Meeting by Trustee Chair Steven Karpstein.
Chairman Karpstein stated:
“This special one-time distribution of $7 per trust unit was attributable to SAFE’s successful long-term investment in commercial real estate in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which was recently sold by SAFE at a substantial gain. Over the years, the Colorado Springs building generated much of the income used to pay the annual December distribution. Our success with this investment was due to the patience of Shee Atiká’s shareholders over the long term, and the Trustees felt it was appropriate to share SAFE’s sale gain with shareholders through a special one-time distribution.”
The record date for the special distribution was Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time. The distribution was paid on July 21 to shareholders who had arranged for direct deposit. Checks were mailed on July 23 to those who had not arranged for direct deposit.

Benefits Update
ANCSA Change to Benefit Elders
The Alaska Native Settlement Trust Eligibility Act is a new law that helps protect certain Alaska Natives from losing access to public assistance programs. For the next five years, if an elderly, blind, or disabled Alaska Native (or their descendant) receives money or benefits from a special type of trust called a “Settlement Trust,” that money won’t count against them when applying for things like Medicaid or food assistance.
Shee Atiká has consistently supported the various bills that included this legislation over the years, even sending letters of support along the way. We’re truly grateful to Alaska’s congressional delegation for their ongoing efforts to move this forward—it means so much to our cherished elders. This means that distributions from the Shee Atiká Fund Endowment (a settlement trust) will not count against them when applying for assistance programs.
